UTPB Plays Tough Vs. Javelinas

ODESSA, Texas – The University of Texas Permian Basin baseball team (10-9, Lone Star Conference, 10-9) lost 7-0 and 6-5 to Texas A&M Kingsville (9-10 LSC, 11-10), Saturday afternoon at Roden Field.

Game 1
In the first and second innings, UTPB had two runners on.  Texas A&M Kingsville made some nice plays to keep the Falcons from scoring.

The Javelinas scored seven runs over the fourth and fifth innings to seal the game.

For UT Permian Basin, junior Bryan Adams (2-1) gave up four hits, five runs with three earned and struck out three in four innings.  

For Texas A&M Kingsville, Sergio Lopez (3-2) threw a four-hit shutout with a walk and a strikeout in seven innings.

Game 2
TAMK held a 6-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.  Sophomore Mason Hamlin led off with a single.  Following an out, senior Austin Hall drew a walk.

Senior Brent Rigtrup ripped a single to score Hamlin and move Hall to second.  Junior Gibrian Pena smashed a double to score Hall and make it 6-3.  A run in the fifth inning closed the gap to 6-4.

In the seventh inning with one out, junior Jack Haggerty got on a base due to an error.  Following a fly out, senior Ethan Flodstrom hit a triple to score Haggerty, making it 6-5.  Texas A&M Kingsville got the next batter out to end the game.   

For UT Permian Basin, Flodstrom had two hits.  Junior Isaias Espiritusanto (1-2) gave up two hits, three runs and walked two in one inning.  

For Texas A&M Kingsville, Jake Thielen (1-0) gave up one hit, three runs with two earned, walked one and struck out four in three and one-third innings.

UT Permian Basin closes the series with Texas A&M Kingsville, Sunday, Mar. 3.  The game is scheduled to start at noon.
